Billie Creek Village fields will come alive with five high school bands, drill teams, music, dancing and fireworks at 5:30 p.m. Monday for the 12th annual "1812 Overture" concert and fireworks display. Participating bands and drill teams are from Rockville, South Vermillion, Riverton Parke, North Vermillion and Turkey Run high schools. Each will perform a few selections separately during the hour-long concert before uniting for the grand finale, the "1812 Overture." As the overture begins, so will the choreographed fireworks. First will come a haze of dense smoke, then the distant sound of cannon fire, followed by sounds of gunfire and screaming fireworks aerials. Guest conductor for the concert will be Ward Fritzen, retired principal from the Turkey Run Community School Corp. He spent 25 years as a music director and 10 years in administration. He was one of the founders of the Parke County Band Festival in the late 1960s. The outdoor concert will be south of the Billie Creek farmhouse. Guests are urged to bring lawn chairs and blankets. The village also provides old-fashioned pioneer dinner favorites and snacks in a setting for an evening family picnic. After the concert, a special circus performance is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. The hourlong show will include a high-wire act, elephant act, clowns and more. Admission to Billie Creek is $3.50, which includes parking, admission to the circus and a free tractor-pulled shuttle ride to festivities on the Rockville square. Billie Creek Village is one mile east of Rockville on U.S. 36. Visitors can call the Parke County Tourist Center at (765) 569-5226 or the Terre Haute Convention & Visitors Bureau at 1-800-366-3043 for more information. |
