German Chocolate Cake recipe included in 'Country Cookin'

Tribune-Star Staff Report

Louise Roberts Myers has announced the release of her book of a collection of treasured family recipes, just in time for the Parke County Covered Bridge Festival.

Myers is well-known for her fabulous cooking, and comes from a line of great cooks. The winner of numerous cooking awards, she has baked and decorated hundreds of wedding cakes, birthday cakes and cakes for other special occasions.

"Down Home Country Cookin' " is filled with 280 of her best recipes. Recipes are from her personal collection of family favorites and festival favorites and include Grandma Van Huss' wonderful recipe for German Chocolate Cakes that she used to sell.

As an added bonus, the peach-covered book is filled with illustrations by well-known artist Richard Neuman. The Myerses and Neumans have become good friends through their association during the festival, and the Neumans are frequent guests at the Myers' farm home.

Neuman used collections of family heirlooms and antiques from the Myers home to create artwork for each section of the book. Drawings typical of Neuman's style include Grandmother's cake plate and cookie jar, rolling pins and fruit jars with husband Larry Myers' hand-turned wooden lids.

Neuman's artwork and Myers' woodwork can both be found in the big tent during the Covered Bridge Festival.

The book is now available at the Tourist Center/1883 Railroad Depot at 401 E. Ohio St. in Rockville and at the gift shop at Turkey Run Inn. Copies may also be purchased at the Myers' booth in the big tent.
